car review - Alaska Road Trip With the Chevrolet Volt and Olympus E-P3 Camera

This past April, I was given the opportunity to go on a June road trip in a 2011 Chevy Volt and photograph it with the newly launched Olympus E-P3 camera.
When I told friends that I was going to Alaska to drive a Chevrolet Volt around, their first reactions were, “Ice Road Truckers!” Then came a barrage of questions; “Good luck with that, can you even drive that far in it? What’s the range, like 50 miles? How are you going to charge it in the middle of the wilderness? Are small towns even equipped to recharge electric vehicles? How long does it take to charge it?”

Can you even drive it that far?
The Chevrolet Volt was designed specifically to be a long-range electric vehicle. Contrary to many people’s general impression, it is an entirely electric-powered vehicle and a hybrid. The electric range is 25-50 miles depending on weather and terrain. The 1.4L gasoline-powered engine kicks in after that only to support the electric system and the 435-pound lithium-ion battery system – the car is never directly powered by gasoline.
How are you going to charge it in the middle of the wilderness?
To be fair, I was only on the edge of the wilderness. In Seward, my accommodations were a lodge set-up; six or eight small buildings with rooms and ample parking in front. Each lodge had electric outlets on the outside. Recharging was really quite simple. The plug and cord is in a compartment in the trunk, you open the charging panel to the left of the driver’s side door, and you simply plug it in. Easy as that.

How long does it take to charge it?
It depends on what you plug it into. You can plug it into a regular, household 120V outlet, and it will take about 12 hours. If you have access to, or install, a 240V outlet, it recharges in around four hours. Typically, washing machines or dryers use 240V outlets, so it’s not a strange or difficult request to have or have a professional electrician install an outlet.

Car review – review the 2012 porsche 911

The next generation Porsche 911, internally known as project 991, isn’t set to be officially shown until September at the Frankfurt Auto Show this year. Spy shots have been posted on such sites as autospies.com and WordCarFans. Now a video from Porsche has been released on their YouTube channel.
Clear differences between the new model and the current 997 are the more upright headlights, a slightly longer body, and the side mirrors are now positioned at the side of the doors and not at the window.
Other new features for the new 911 will include extensive use of lightweight carbon materials and active aerodynamics–surfaces that react to what the car is doing, and how fast it’s doing it. Expect adjustable front and rear spoilers, dynamically opening and closing air intakes and an automatic rear wing.
As for powertrains, reports coming out of Germany claim power in the base Carrera will stand at 350 horsepower from a 3.4-liter boxer engine and 280 lb-ft of torque. Step up to the Carrera S, however, and you’re expected to get a bigger 3.8-liter engine and 400 horsepower and 325 lb-ft of torque. New drivetrain technology includes a special electronically controlled limited-slip differential in cars equipped with the seven-speed PDK dual-clutch transmission.

Sheer driving enjoyment
Under that sculpted hood, you’ll find one of two new powerful and efficient engines, boasting the latest manual or automatic six-speed transmissions for a powerful, yet smooth ride.
Diesel engines
The two 2011 diesel offerings won’t disappoint. Our new turbo-charged 2.2 Litre unit will be available in two power outputs of 163 or 184 PS. Not only are our new diesel units more powerful, but they also have much lower CO2 emissions, falling below taxation thresholds.
Transmission and drive options

Whichever route you go, know that the standard Captiva chassis has been to honed for enhanced vehicle dynamics, improved cornering, and impressive roll characteristics, for an enjoyable drive every trip.

Safety features
The New Captiva boasts six airbags– dual front and side airbags for the driver and front passenger and curtain airbags for the outer rear passengers. Three-point seat belts with belt tensioners and belt force limiters look after those in the front seats, while ISOFIX anchor points are fitted to the outer seats of the second row, to facilitate the quick and secure fitting of child seats.
Keeping you reassured on the road is also a priority. Good to know, then, that aTraction Control System is keeping you planted, that Electronic Stability Control is eliminating over and under-steer, and that a Brake Assist System is ready and waiting to reduce braking distances in the event of an emergency. All these safety features come as standard.
Another smart safety first for the New Captiva is Hill Start Assist which helps to prevent the "roll back" on hill starts.
Driving down-hill is easier to thanks to our Descent Control System. It’s a technology that automatically slows the vehicle on steep gradients, which means you don’t have to keep such a heavy foot on the brake pedal.
Watch the New Captiva features video to see how the standard "Follow-me-home" headlamps and the optional parking camera both work.

The all new Chevrolet Orlando – 7-seat flexibility meets modern design

The Chevrolet Orlando – a boldly designed family vehicle that’s as versatile on the inside as it is striking on the outside. One moment it’s transporting seven people in comfort, the next the seats are down and it’s full of furniture. With its multiple seating combinations the Orlando is a supremely adaptable vehicle.

Outstanding design
Strikingly different, the Orlando is a personal statement – this is one car that will stand out in the car park, and for all the right reasons.
The Orlando is available in a range of attractive colours from ‘Smokey Grey’ to ‘Velvet Red’. Alloy wheels come as standard on the LT and LTZ trims.

Stylish interior design

Inside, the Orlando is every bit as stylish as it is on the outside. A Corvette-inspired dual-cockpit provides the centerpiece of the interior, while slick paneling flows through the spacious cabin in a wave-like manner.
Dials and driver-aids are intuitively located, with key audio and MP3 controls either on the steering wheel or on close by on the dash.
Chevrolet ice-blue lighting illuminates the instruments and the dials clearly.
Passengers will find the inside of the Orlando is surprisingly roomy with more than enough leg- and headroom.

It's all about flexibility
7-seaters need to do so much more than seat 7 people, these days, it’s all about versatility. So, whether you need to fill your MPV with friends/luggage/dogs or golf bags, the Orlando has the seating and storage solutions to make it possible. The Orlando truly is whatever you want it to be.
The Orlando has multiple seating combinations: if you’re transporting bulky items you can fold all the rear seats down flat, or just some of them – and so easily that you can do it with one hand.
There are also many places to store or conceal your personal items such as a cargo compartment in the rear wheel well, or another behind the radio to discreetly store and connect MP3 players and audio equipment.

Safety - we take it seriously
We know that safety is a priority for you. That’s why the Orlando uses the latest in airbag technology and incorporates 6 airbags: dual front airbags, seat mounted thorax/pelvis airbags, and roof rail curtain airbags to protect the neck and head of passengers should side impact occur. Dual ISOFIX system is standard on all Orlando models – for use with ISOFIX child seats.

The Orlando features a tough reinforced safety cage that incorporates a ‘long cradle’ high energy absorbing system to lessen the effect of any impact and safeguard occupants.
Ultra high tensile strength steels are used in all areas that call for special protection – such as side pillars and fuel tank casings – while crash boxes and crumple zones use softer aluminium to further cushion any impact.

Traction control is standard
‘Electronic Stability Control’ system provides traction control to help avert slides, by automatically applying corrective braking to appropriate wheels to help you quickly regain control.
Park assist
Parking is also made a little safer – LT and LTZ models offer an intelligent park assist system to protect the vehicle’s exterior from unnecessary damage.

Performance when you need it
Performance may not be something that you’d expect from a seven seater but, as usual, the Orlando surprises. The engines pull hard and strong, working together with the vehicle’s specifically developed suspension systems to deliver supple handling, while the design of the available powerplants ensure impressive levels of economy.
Dynamic drive is delivered by a range of engines, from a 1.8L 5-speed petrol engine, to a 2.0L diesel model available in automatic or 6-speed manual. Petrol or diesel, manual or automatic – whichever engine or transmission you go for, you’ll find the drive dynamic, the gear shifting silky smooth and the power as adept at pulling heavy loads as it is at transporting multiple occupants.
The Orlando may have the versatility of an MPV, but its handling feels like no other vehicle in the segment. In the curves it hugs the road with sure-footed confidence, and on the open road it settles in for a smooth enjoyable ride, whatever the conditions.

2012 Mitsubishi Eclipse Summary

Overview
Mitsubishi's distinct sports coupe is back for 2012, but according to the automaker, this is its last year of production. For Eclipse enthusiasts looking to buy this boldly styled coupe in its final year, there is a new model Mitsubishi is calling the Special Edition. The Eclipse SE features black side mirrors and 18-inch dark finish alloy wheels, to name a couple features. The 2012 Eclipse is powered by a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 162 horsepower. If you have a lead foot, Mitsubishi offers a GT model that has a 265-horsepower 3.8-liter V-6 engine under the hood. This engine is paired with a five-speed automatic transmission that incorporates Mitsubishi's Sportronic transmission technology. The GS model is the most affordable of the lineup. Standard features include a six-speaker 140-watt AM/FM/CD player with MP3 playing capability, dual exhaust, and 18-inch alloy wheels to name a few. The Eclipse is equipped with six standard airbags, as well as electronic brake force distribution. Other safety features include active stability control, and traction control logic. The standard Eclipse might be a bit light on the power for some, but the GT is a more competitive coupe.
The Range
Body Style: Coupe, Convertible
Engines: 2.4L, I-4; 3.8L V-6

Transmissions: 5M; 4A; 5A

What's New
2012 is the last model year of production for the Eclipse and, in order to send it out on a high note, Mitsubishi has added a Special Edition model to the mix. This SE model will feature black side mirrors, dark finish alloy wheels, and an extensive list of high-end standard features seen on the GS Sport.
Exterior
The 2012 Eclipse has a very distinct look. It features fender flares that widen the vehicle's stance, as well as fog lights and a low-profile front end. The rounded rear may be considered by some to be the weak point, although the dual exhausts do help. The Eclipse rides on standard 18-inch wheels that add to the sportiness of the coupe and convertible.
Interior
The interior of the Eclipse is very sleek, which adds to the sportiness of the car. It features sporty chrome pedals. The interior control panels illuminate a light-blue color at night, and Mitsubishi says the gauges were inspired by those found on motorcycles.
Performance & Handling
While the base Eclipse's 2.4-liter engine doesn't pack much punch with 162 horsepower, the GT model is more likely to satisfy. It packs a 3.8-liter V-6 engine that produces 265 horsepower. This vehicle is paired with a five-speed automatic transmission with Mitsubishi's Sportronic transmission technology, which allows the driver to manually select gears.

The Eclipse features numerous standard safety features such as six airbags and Electronic Brake-force Distribution. Other standard features include active stability control and traction control Logic.
